Academic Writing Support
Dissertation, Thesis & Research Writing Support
Writing a dissertation or thesis can be an isolating experience.
Whether you're developing a research proposal, planning a dissertation chapter, working towards a PhD, or preparing an academic application, it can be difficult to find the space to think through ideas, establish a clear structure, and maintain momentum.
I offer one-to-one support for postgraduate researchers and prospective doctoral students who would benefit from thoughtful feedback, practical guidance, and accountability.
I have a PhD in creative and critical writing and I’ve taught in higher education for more than a decade — including postgraduate modules on practice-based and practice-led research skills. Alongside my work with creative writers, I have supported postgraduate students with doctoral applications, research writing, and large-scale academic projects.
How I can help
I offer support with these areas of academic writing:
• Clarifying the structure of a dissertation or thesis
• Developing and organising ideas
• Building confidence as an academic writer
• Creating realistic writing plans
• Working through writing blocks and procrastination
• Feedback on drafts and chapters
• Preparing PhD applications and research proposals
• Maintaining momentum on long-term projects
I do not write or rewrite student projects or complete assessed work. My role is to support you in developing your own ideas, writing practices, and academic voice.
Who I work with
• Master's students
• PhD students
• Prospective doctoral candidates
• Creative practice researchers
• Mature students returning to higher education
If you're unsure whether your project is a good fit, feel free to get in touch for an informal conversation.

Writer and Researcher Feedback
Deborah Cox, writer and PhD student, University of Gloucestershire
'Kate's mentoring was invaluable in helping me secure my PhD place in Creative Writing. She helped me to develop a proposal that was both academically rigorous and true to my creative vision and my voice, asking exactly the right questions to sharpen my thinking. Her feedback was insightful, encouraging, and transformative. I couldn't have asked for a better mentor, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone developing a research proposal or creative-critical project.’
